Quiz Club Meeting Set #2

The CET Quiz Club had its second official session on 30th July 2009. The attendance was lesser, for which I hold the industrial visits of the final years responsible. The session started late, thanks to an ISTE meeting on Aavishkar committee elections. (Saptarshi was giddy over being elected as the publicity co-convenor. I am sure he would come to regret it sooner than later. :-) ) Another reason was getting the forms for Manorama Yuva Challenge ready. After a late start, we did the session, which as Raouf described was too interactive. In between our class room was invaded by part time students and we had to shift to another room. Despite all the adversities, we finished by around 6.30 pm. Here is the set presented by yours truly. (For the reason why I was chosen, read the post on the previous set carefully. ;-) ) The lone pitfall in an otherwise perfect scenario was the absence of the promised "sisters" to our "brotherhood". All interested in quizzing are welcome to the meeting, which is a weekly affair, on every Thursday at 4.15 pm. Hopefully the fairer sex would grace us with their presence next time around. :-)

CET Quiz Club

We are proud to announce that the CET Quiz Club was officially ~~formed~~ revived on the 16^th of July, 2009. We say ‘revived’ because it would be arrogant beyond belief on our part to take credit for ‘forming a quiz club’ in a place which has been one of the knowledge hotbeds of the state. Doubtless a club once thrived here and died somewhere down the years with the waning interest in quizzing. We gave ourselves the task of rejuvenating this brotherhood (We are on the lookout for sisters too ;-) ).

It went better than we hoped. In the first week, a few of us seniors got together informally with some second years to outline a ‘plan of action’ – for want of a better word. I half expected no one to turn up the next week, but turn up, they did and we had our first official session of the Quiz Club. Vishnu Vijay of MCA, one of the driving forces behind the whole idea, had brought a beautiful set of 30 questions to start things off in style. The idea was to give the newcomers an idea of what to expect in the Kerala circuit today and of course, to have a good time.

It would be a huge wrench if I didn’t mention the batch who just missed out on the club. Jithin, Jose (Both of them even turned up for the second meeting), Deepak and Muni( who were instrumental in this blog which was sort of a frontrunner for the club) and the Aswin-Ganesh duo, a familiar and formidable sight on the quizzing stages in and around the capital.

Of the people who will be around A honorable mention to Jinson and Aditya who turned up for both the meetings and Saptarshi whose enthusiasm for the club was infective.

We will be posting the set which is presented in the Club meeting each week, in the blog. Each week, the winner will get to present the set for the next week. This way, we hope the guys who couldn’t make it to the meetings can also have a go at the questions. Of course, anyone can attempt them.

So, in a nutshell, the club is set up to ensure the continuity of the quizzing tradition at CET. Unless there is a classy and regular Quiz Club, those with quality in each batch wont get encouragement or guidance. We are looking to achieve that end and hopefully we will. And of course have some good fun along the way. Happy Quizzing!!!

MAHAQUIZZER 2009

The KQA will host the National Quiz Championship Mahaquizzer cross twelve different cities on 24th May 2009.The questions have been set by Arun Hiregange, Dibyendu Das, Thejaswi Udupa, Avinash Thirumalai and Ochintya Sharma.The Trivandrum edition will be held at the Govt. College for Women, Vazhuthacaud and will be co ordinated by none other than Arul Mani.

The person recording the highest score across all centres will hold the title of Mahaquizzer for 2009. She/he will also be awarded the Wing Commander G.R. Mulky Trophy for Quizzing Excellence.This trophy will be given in June 2009 during the KQA 26th Anniversary event.

A valuable friend I made online, a brilliant quizzer and an even better quizmaster, once told me that the hallmark of a good set is it's work-out-ability. Hence I try to make my sets very work-out-able. But trying to create such a set has a lot of pitfalls like making the answer too obvious, or on the contrary, making it too tough, when something you take for granted maybe new information for someone else. And when all questions are made to be work-outable, the set may lose it's charm as an arbitrary element is needed for every quiz. I've tried my best to tread the middle path and make this a good set, in fact, it's my favorite set among those I've made yet( I've made only 3 though :P). I hope everyone attempts it.
