Quiz Club Meeting Set #2

The CET Quiz Club had its second official session on 30th July 2009. The attendance was lesser, for which I hold the industrial visits of the final years responsible. The session started late, thanks to an ISTE meeting on Aavishkar committee elections. (Saptarshi was giddy over being elected as the publicity co-convenor. I am sure he would come to regret it sooner than later. :-) ) Another reason was getting the forms for Manorama Yuva Challenge ready. After a late start, we did the session, which as Raouf described was too interactive. In between our class room was invaded by part time students and we had to shift to another room. Despite all the adversities, we finished by around 6.30 pm. Here is the set presented by yours truly. (For the reason why I was chosen, read the post on the previous set carefully. ;-) ) The lone pitfall in an otherwise perfect scenario was the absence of the promised "sisters" to our "brotherhood". All interested in quizzing are welcome to the meeting, which is a weekly affair, on every Thursday at 4.15 pm. Hopefully the fairer sex would grace us with their presence next time around. :-)

Quiz #19

This is my second set at the blog. (For those who are not aware of it, my first set was "posted by Jose on my behalf") As usual, the questions are quite lengthy and complicated. Hope the set would stimulate your Grey Cells.

1. “A renowned male expert at something dies a hideous death and straight away a renowned expert at something quite different gets a surprise call and has to take an unexpected plane flight and then face some 36 hours of astoundingly dangerous and exhausting adventures involving a good-looking (and of course expert) member of the opposite sex and when the two of them finally get access to a double bed she disrobes and tells him mischievously (almost minatorily) to prepare himself for strenuous sex. Where are we?” Review by Geoffrey K. Pullum. What is he discussing?

2. This photograph was released by NASA in 1995 and was credited to Jeff Hester and Paul Scowen of Arizona State University. It was given a self descriptive name and remains one of the most popular images of outer space. Identify.

3. The concept of ___________ ____ in India was introduced in the nineteenth century, when it was raised as 'Volunteers'. It was officially started by the British through Indian ___________ Act of 1920. In Independent India, it was raised on 9th October 1949 after the Independence ___________ ____ Act was passed in 1948. October 9 is therefore celebrated as Prime Minister's ___________ ____ Day Parade. It is often referred to as The Terriers.

4. Who brought out the stamp in 1983? What does it depict?

5. Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon and _______. Randy joined in 1976. Complete the list. How do we collectively know them?

6. Identify the martyr of yesteryears. His tragic end three decades back is said to have inspired a critically acclaimed movie. Which annual event in Kerala was supposedly started in his memory? (Some say that it is only an urban legend, while others claim that it is true.)

7. This invention is named after its principle of operation. It was invented by the Scottish chemist James _____ who is most famous for his work on the liquefaction of gases and his researches at temperatures approaching absolute zero. He designed it for storing liquid oxygen and it was initially named after him. It was commercially marketed by a German company that patented it which later became a generic name. Give me any of the three names by which it is known.

8. If A is currently ranked #1 with a rating of 9.1 and B is at both #2 (9.1) and #3 (9.0) spots, which Indian is currently at #70 with 8.4? Put funda.

(A)

(B)

9. It was first created in Russia by the Bolshevik Party Central Committee in late October 1917 to provide continuous and flexible leadership during the October Revolution. The name is derived from the Russian words Politicheskoye Buro. It was dissolved after the Revolution, but was reestablished after the Eighth Party Congress in 1919. Its initial members were Vladimir Lenin, Leon Trotsky, Joseph Stalin, Lev Kamenev and Nikolai Krestinsky. What?

10. Connect the animals. The list is exhaustive and the order is important.

PS: This time around the connect is straight forward. As Jose pointed out this is an easier and possibly high scoring set.

CET Quiz Club

We are proud to announce that the CET Quiz Club was officially formed revived on the 16th of July, 2009. We say ‘revived’ because it would be arrogant beyond belief on our part to take credit for ‘forming a quiz club’ in a place which has been one of the knowledge hotbeds of the state. Doubtless a club once thrived here and died somewhere down the years with the waning interest in quizzing. We gave ourselves the task of rejuvenating this brotherhood (We are on the lookout for sisters too ;-) ).

It went better than we hoped. In the first week, a few of us seniors got together informally with some second years to outline a ‘plan of action’ – for want of a better word. I half expected no one to turn up the next week, but turn up, they did and we had our first official session of the Quiz Club. Vishnu Vijay of MCA, one of the driving forces behind the whole idea, had brought a beautiful set of 30 questions to start things off in style. The idea was to give the newcomers an idea of what to expect in the Kerala circuit today and of course, to have a good time.

It would be a huge wrench if I didn’t mention the batch who just missed out on the club. Jithin, Jose (Both of them even turned up for the second meeting), Deepak and Muni( who were instrumental in this blog which was sort of a frontrunner for the club) and the Aswin-Ganesh duo, a familiar and formidable sight on the quizzing stages in and around the capital.

Of the people who will be around A honorable mention to Jinson and Aditya who turned up for both the meetings and Saptarshi whose enthusiasm for the club was infective.

We will be posting the set which is presented in the Club meeting each week, in the blog. Each week, the winner will get to present the set for the next week. This way, we hope the guys who couldn’t make it to the meetings can also have a go at the questions. Of course, anyone can attempt them.

So, in a nutshell, the club is set up to ensure the continuity of the quizzing tradition at CET. Unless there is a classy and regular Quiz Club, those with quality in each batch wont get encouragement or guidance. We are looking to achieve that end and hopefully we will. And of course have some good fun along the way. Happy Quizzing!!!
